The Video Games Museum in Heraklion, Crete, officially opened its doors to the public on January 1, 2025, under the motto “Preserving the Legacy of Video Games for Future Generations.” The museum is dedicated to the cultural and technological evolution of video games, showcasing an extensive collection of over 300 consoles and thousands of games.

Visitors can enjoy a unique, immersive experience through nostalgic spaces such as the 1980s living room and the 1990s kid’s bedroom, designed to transport them through different eras of gaming. The museum’s first temporary exhibition, titled “Choose Your Weapon,” focuses on the history of video game controllers, presenting their evolution through iconic designs.

As a non-profit organization, the Video Games Museum’s mission is to educate, inspire, and engage the public – from passionate gamers to those simply curious about the history of games.

We are proud to announce that the museum is now the first Greek member of the EFGAMP (European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects).

“We are excited to welcome the Video Games Museum from Heraklion as our first member from Greece,” says Andreas Lange, COO of EFGAMP. “It shows that video games are now recognized as cultural assets across Europe. We also look forward to gaining valuable insights from yet another rich cultural region.”

“During the preparations for our opening, we greatly benefited from the knowledge and experience of many EFGAMP members,” notes Manolis Varouchas, founder of the museum. “It was clear to us that joining EFGAMP was essential, so we could face the challenges of preserving and promoting digital game heritage together.”
